Fantastic Stochastic

You may already know of stochastic FM screening. In the past, this process was beset with technical problems due to the use of film, preventing its real potential from being recognised.

Hawthornes is one of the first companies to use stochastic screening in conjunction with Computer To Plate (CTP) facilities, with exceptional results! We can now offer you a technique that will make your printed images look more vivid with smooth tones and excellent clarity, an improvement over the traditional, standard AM screening process. This is ideal for images which require a high quality appearance.

What is Stochastic (FM) Screening?

In standard AM (Amplitude Modulation) screening, the dots of colour vary in size and are laid out in orderly lines along screen angles.

In stochastic FM (Frequency Modulated) screening, the dots remain a standard size but are of a higher frequency and are placed at random. The FM screening software used at Hawthornes ensures that the optimum placement of dots is determined, so that
no graininess or visual patterns appear in the printed image.

This type of screening can greatly improve the quality of printed images, particularly fine art and photographic subjects, ehancing sharpness, clarity and vibrance.
